Snoring, observed breathing pauses during sleep and daytime sleepiness may warrant assessment for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA or OSAS). A questionnaire can identify risk but does not establish a diagnosis or disease severity.

STOP-Bang: a screening tool
STOP-Bang screens adults for obstructive sleep apnoea risk. Discuss the result with your doctor alongside symptoms and clinical history. A low score alone does not exclude apnoea.

The role of BMI
Body mass index relates weight to height: kilograms divided by squared height in metres. It is one screening factor and cannot confirm or exclude apnoea on its own.
From suspicion to diagnosis
Diagnosis requires clinical assessment and, when indicated, a sleep study. The clinician chooses polysomnography or appropriate home monitoring according to the clinical picture. Questionnaires do not replace these investigations.
Preparing for assessment
Bring previous sleep-study reports and information about current treatments. See the consultation and venues pages for arrangements.
